Mobile Medical
Last night the Mobile Medical team visited a slum community and we were able to help people with sore throats, sore stomachs, rashes and wound care... As well as giving the kids soymilk.
Thanks to our kind Soymilk sponsors @Entrust and @So!Soy
We love meeting the families who live on the edge, and can see the potential in each one to become a world changer.
Our goal is to help this newborn reach his first birthday.

Why Flame is Investing in Education in Cambodia
A recent UN report reported that Cambodia will see a growth in the working age population from now until 2030. These people will need jobs, and without education and training many will fall along the wayside, adding to the numbers of urban poor.
In an article in the Phnom Penh Post Tasneem Mirza, an economist and one of the authors of the report, states "The time to act is now, the government has to have a strategy. They have to ensure more jobs.”
Miguel Chanco, lead ASEAN analyst for the Economist Intelligence Unit, said that education would be key, and that “the government should redirect more of its resources to this vital area, while simultaneously clamping down on corruption in schools”.
“Without an effective education system, the country’s skills gap will remain large and the economy will struggle to move up the value chain,” he added.
However, Cambodia is still among the countries making the least investment in education, the UN report found – although increases to the education budget have been seen in recent years.
This is where NGO's like Flame step in, providing complimentary education and training and support for students. Flame also provides opportunities for vocational training - we endeavour to make sure that our students have jobs to go to. Jobs that will help the future prosperity of Cambodia as a nation.

Water Water
Clean water is something many of us take for granted. We turn a tap, and there it is.
Water water
In the slums where Flame works, clean water is not at the other end of the tap, it has to be bought. Rithy, our 'almost-doctor' runs the Mobile Medical Tuktuk, and has found a solution to the clean water issue: a water filter that needs no electricity, only water. Last night, he and Sothy (another Flame young leader who is studying to become a pediatrician) installed a water filter in a slum. This is the first we have done, and we will monitor and check to see if this is a sustainable solution. Keep Watching This Space!
Want to help us bring more water filters to slums in Phnom Penh?

Flame River Cruise
Flame is growing and expanding! As a celebration and 'thank you' to the many volunteers helping us, we went out on the riverboat for an evening on the weekend.
Thanks again to Mak Shanton and the team for making the awesome dinner :)

Longdy Chhap
My name is Longdy and I am passionate about helping children. I love it when I see a kids face light up, everything is suddenly good and there are possibilities. I know as a student of psychology I can observe and gather what I need to really make a difference in their lives. I am currently studying Psych at the Royal University Of Phnom Penh as well as doing a bachelor of English in my spare time. I am an intern at Flame, and have the privilege of counselling kids. I am also the House Leader at the Flame Guys Leadership Academy.
At the end of the month I will be travelling to Singapore to speak at a conference. This is the second time for me to head overseas to speak, and I love seeing the way other people study and work. I can share from my own life and learn a lot too.
I got the job!
My name is Thach, and I am one of the most shy young adults living at the Leadership Academy. Lately, my confidence has really been growing and even though I still feel afraid, I just tell myself that I can do it. I saw an ad for a job as a photographer working with kids- exactly what I love. The interview was so scary, but I GOT THE JOB!! When I was younger, someone (@Tim Doak) taught me photography and now I can do that for other kids. This is the Flame Full Circle.
I took this picture in Phnom Penh
Longdy Gains More International Experience
Longdy is the team leader of the Flame Leadership Academy for young men, and is the Flame intern counsellor. He won a scholarship to study at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, where he is majoring in Psychology. He is concurrently studying a Bachelor of English - so much of the material he needs to read and understand is in English. He would love to continue studying and gain a masters degree and become a senior counsellor.
At the end of the month, Longdy will be flying to Singapore to speak at the Trust Forum Asia. He sees this as an opportunity to develop his public speaking and gain further overseas experience. He was amazed during his last visit to Singapore by the sense of how hardworking Singaporeans are. He was deeply impacted and wants to challenge himself, dig deep and become all he can be.
Celebration
Khmer New Year is just around the corner, so yesterday we had a special day at Sen Sok with games and fun, and a huge selection of food for the kids and their families to enjoy.
Happy Khmer New Year!
This is the sound of New Year:
Flame is on Fire!
What a spectacular retreat!! We are super excited about the growth and expansion of Flame, with the staff all on board. We had our last sessions today and can see a theme coming through clearly :) We all love being part of the team, and love living life to the fullest. Watch out Cambodia, here we come!
Hands all in...
Flame Team Retreat
Kep is an amazing place, and the team have enjoyed the seafood, and the phosphorescence late last night .... Hounthy, Poeurn, Graeme, Sue and Nicola literally taking a leap into the darkness, met by Fluoro Green in the deep. If you don't know what I'm talking about, maybe you need to come to Cambodia?
Today we have talked about the past and are now dipping into the future: reach more slum families, more communities, with more ways to help build sustainable, dignified lives.
The flame team
Flame Road Trip
Flame Road Trip: today we are heading to Kep for a Flame staff retreat.
We have some great ideas about our time together over the next three days. Team building is a priority, the team that plays together, stays together :) We sense that there is a lot in store for Flame. Watch this space as we Explore and Expand.
Three hours in the van to Kep
Hot Days at Sen Sok
Today we have the kids program again at Sen Sok, with over 80 little kids in the heat. The Flame young adults led the kids in songs and games, with the Littlies colouring in.
The big kids who look after their siblings get a well deserved break, and the little kids love colouring in!! Win Win.
Cute kids love gathering at the Flame Community Centre at Sen Sok
Rithy held a clinic at the end of the session for anyone needing medical care.
Happy Easter to everyone from the Sen Sok Team!!
English lesson at Sen Sok Activity Centre
Here the children have having English lessons. Just before this they were repeating the English sentences. This extra study will help them do better at school - and when they get older get a better job.
